Phosphatidylserine: The Brain Nutrient

Though you may not have heard of it, and most likely can’t pronounce it, Phosphatidylserine is a powerful compound that is capable of producing neurological and physiological effects on the human body. Researchers at the University of Milan conducted a study of the effects of Phosphatidylserine on mood, stress, cortisol, and memory. They studied 10 women, aged 70-81 years old, who were suffering with depression. They found that Phosphatidylserine increased brain turnover of norepinephrine, dopamine, acetylcholine and glucose reserves. Essentially, this means that Phosphatidylserine was effective in reducing anxiety, while also lessening their symptoms of depression, and improving long-term memory and learning. The researchers used the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD) and clinical observation to confirm these findings.6

Phosphatidylserine is a natural substance. In fact, it is a component of the cerebral cortex’s neuronal membrane.7 One of its jobs is to help restore your brain's supply and output of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter essential to memory.8 It also helps restore your brain's supply and output of dopamine, which is essential to memory, attention, and problem-solving.9-15 Because of this, maintaining an adequate supply of Phosphatidylserine in your body can help improve memory, and lessen the symptoms of ADHD.
